Way to Hike the Seven Hanging Valleys Trail

The trail of the seven suspended Valleys (Sete Vales Suspensos) is a beautiful coastal hike in the Algarve, in the south of Portugal. This half-day hike is one of the best things to do in the Algarve with beautiful beaches, natural arches, limestone cliffs, and views of the prominent Atlantic coast. No matter where you are staying in the Algarve in Portugal, be sure to hike the Seven Suspended Valleys hiking trail for a unique experience.

Trail of the seven suspended valleys – the details

The Seven Suspended Valleys hiking trail stretches between Praia da Marinha and Praia do Vale de Centianes beaches. You can start from any end, but most hikers start at Praia da Marinha, known as one of the most beautiful beaches in Europe.

Embracing the Atlantic Ocean with high viewpoints, beach access, and even places to taste food and plonk, the trip starts with a magnificent view of Acro Natural, or as our Guide liked to call it, elephant rocks and Praia da Marinha Beach. This is a moderately difficult hike, so be sure to wear good hiking boots and take water with you.

What to expect on the Seven suspended Valleys hike

During the hike through the seven suspended valleys, some of the most beautiful landscapes on the planet await you. A few years ago, we traveled the Great Ocean Road in Australia thinking that there could not be a more beautiful place on earth. However, the seven hanging valleys have a similar landscape, condensed into a small area, offering extraordinary views after another. You will see high cliffs, hidden caves, and panoramic sea views; this trail offers an unforgettable experience for all.

If you don’t want to walk the 5.7 km, there is parking throughout the hike, so you can see part of the trail and its views. So even if you don’t feel like going for a hike, at least go to one or two of the viewpoints.

Which direction should you walk in?

The most picturesque part of the Seven suspended Valleys hiking trail starts in Praia da Marina, so we recommend starting here. If you have the whole day, you can meet at Carvoiero for dinner, a drink or shopping.

Points of interest during the Seven suspended valleys hike

1. Praia da Marinha

Praia da Marinha is the starting point for most hikers and one of the busiest places. Many people walk a short distance to see the elephant Rock and one of the most beautiful beaches in Portugal from the hiking trail before going back. As you move forward, you will notice that the crowd is getting thinner.

2. View of the cliffs

Going up from Praia da Marinha, you will be greeted with a more impressive view of the Atlantic Ocean. Hiking trails lead to a high plateau and offer various views of the ocean arches and the impressive coastline.

3. Benagil cave

The Benagil Cave is one of the main attractions of the Algarve and can be seen from the hiking trail through the skylight. However, there is no access inside and there are ropes around, so the view is not the best.

4. Benagil Beach

The next stop is Praia de Benagil. It is an ideal place to take a break, have lunch and enjoy the beach. You will have to go down a flight of stairs to the beach and the town, but the path is well marked with yellow and red stripes on the rocks and road signs. These marks will guide you along the route. We had no problem finding our way around.
