Places to Stay in Rome: Places and Neighbourhoods

So, have you finally bitten the bullet and are you planning this trip to Rome? It’s fantastic and I’m sure you will love the city as much as I do. And if you need help figuring out where to stay in Rome, you’ve come to the right place, because I have hotel recommendations in the best neighborhoods!

From the best boutique hotels in Trastevere to the best luxury hotels in the Eternal City, this guide has something for every type of trip. I have a place in mind, whether you want to live around the corner from the Trevi Fountain or away from the noise and crowds of the historic center of Rome.

You should listen to me because I have practically become an expert on Rome after visiting at least 6 times over the years. I learned to bypass most of the tourist traps, to see (almost) all the sites that interested me, to find accommodation adapted to my budget and my travel preferences. Combine that with Dave and DEB’s number of visits and you’ll see why we know the best places to stay in Rome.

Accommodation in Rome

When booking a hotel in Rome, keep two things in mind: The location of the accommodation relative to public transport and the density of tourist crowds in the area. The city is huge and it is unrealistic to walk everywhere all the time, especially if you have been in the city for a while. Buses are the slowest, but the most important means of public transport to get around the Centro Storico.

Trams and subways are faster, the latter being the fastest Option to get from the Colosseum to the Spanish Steps, for example, but they do not cover the city as comprehensively. As for the crowds, let’s just say that if you don’t like being in a sea of people, you won’t like exploring the historic center of Rome. Book a hotel further away from the tourist areas to experience a calmer and peaceful atmosphere in this mega-popular metropolis.

Where we stayed in Rome

Dave and Seb stayed for the first time at the Hotel Nazionale in Centro Storico and recommend it to other travelers who prefer a centrally located hotel. All the main attractions are within walking distance and you will appreciate spacious rooms with comfortable beds.

I stayed at Morgagni House and I recommend it to budget travelers who want the best value for money. If you don’t mind taking the metro, you are only 15 minutes from the heart of Rome.

Trastevere: Our Recommendation

Trastevere is a trendy district separated from ancient Rome by the Tiber River. Anyone can stay here and enjoy it; most of the popular sites in the historic center are within walking distance, but the crowds are not as bad as those in the Centro Storico.

In addition, the hotels in Trastevere are affordable than those on the right bank of the Tiber, with many options in all price ranges. The same goes for Restaurants and Bars; from chic rooftop lounges to inexpensive local Bars, Trastevere is one of the best areas of Rome for nightlife and Italian cuisine.

The area is within walking distance and offers many interesting sites within walking distance. Take a 15-minute walk from your hotel and you will come across a fantastic church, but also a picturesque cobbled alley adorned with plants and statues.
