The Algarve is certainly the first place that comes to mind when you think of the stunning beaches of Portugal. And for good reason! Located on the Atlantic coast, it is known for its spectacular landscapes with picturesque beaches lined with orange sandstone cliffs and sea caves such as Benagil. Since it is located right above North Africa, you can enjoy at least 300 days of sunshine a year. So it doesn’t matter when you decide to visit. They are always spoiled. However, deciding where to stay in the Algarve can be difficult because there are so many fantastic areas to choose from.
One thing that we had a little trouble doing during our first visit to the Algarve was deciding where to stay to make the most of it. It is a difficult choice between Lagos, Albufeira and small fishing villages such as Salema in the center and west of the Algarve, as well as Faro and the Ria Formosa Natural Park in the east. There were so many choices. Each part of the region has a different personality, and we will help you determine which personality best matches yours.
We know how important it is to find the right neighborhood for your trip. Find places to stay in the Algarve here – with our additional tips on the best hotels and resorts in each region.
No wonder people flock to The Algarve. The region includes the entire southern coast of Portugal, stretching from the Spanish border to its western tip near Lagos. We loved our stay in the Algarve and recommend it to anyone planning to visit Portugal.
Why you should listen to us
We know The Algarve like the back of our hand. You can read all about our adventures in this beautiful region on our Blog; in fact, keep your eyes peeled because we will include links to guides based on our experiences if necessary.
We know that some people like the social element of a popular tourist spot. Others, on the other hand, prefer a historic old town or a romantic setting on a rooftop terrace. Travel is for everyone, and we want to put you in touch with your ideal region and hotel in the Algarve.
Accommodation in the Algarve
It is safe to say that the Algarve is huge. It includes 16 different communities, and where you choose to stay in the Algarve can have a huge impact on your trip. Although you have Four main options (interior landscape, City, towns or fishing villages), there are so many variations in the personality and points of interest of each area.
Whether you are looking for a central location for nightlife, sandy beaches for a relaxing beach holiday or historical sites to visit, we have you covered. Here’s where to stay in the Algarve.
Where we stayed: Tivoli Carvoeiro Algarve
The last time we visited the Algarve coast, we stayed at the Tivoli Carvoeiro Algarve, in the seaside resort of Carvoeiro. We found this 5-star hotel absolutely beautiful and its location on top of a cliff overlooking Praia do Vale Covo really blew us away. It is certainly the place to stay in the Algarve to enjoy luxurious and innovative views.
It offers a free shuttle service and a daily buffet breakfast. We liked the resort’s outdoor pools and Spa; there’s even a dive center on-site. The rooms themselves offer balconies or terraces, some of which have ocean views (well worth the money if you appreciate this outdoor space).
1. Carvoeiro: Our Recommendation
Carvoeiro is a slightly sleepy resort. It is quieter Than Albufeira and even Vilamoura. However, it offers an alternative base for those who want a less touristy experience in the Algarve. Carvoeiro has beautiful beaches, including Praia do Paraiso, Praia do Carvoeiro and Praia da Marinha nearby. It is a place in the Algarve where you can explore the beaches, the walks and the caves of the cliffs in complete relaxation.
You can go hiking on the Carvoeiro Promenade, which takes you along a 570-meter coastline with explorable caves. The Walk will finally take you to Algar Seco, a beautiful region of rock formations. The city center is full of cafes and bars, while most people spend their days at the beach and enjoy the 300 days of Algarve sunshine.
